Alumni News

Did you know the Boncos' season opener at Central High stadium marks a return to Brophy football roots?  Best memories reveal that the Broncos played home games at Central from 1968 until moving to Phoenix College in 1982 (though we could be off by a year or so).  Think of how many Brophy grads played and fans watched Brophy football at Central stadium.  We will be sharing the recollections of a few of them this week as the season opener approaches.  One tradition recounted by all: the pregame team march along the canal from Brophy to Central stadium.

Curtis Bruggman (BCP 1982) noted that coming through the 70s, Brophy opened with a game against Central High, then its second biggest rival.  Curtis watched Brophy games at Central for years, eventually playing there in 1979--1981.  He recalled, "Kids from both schools knew each other because many were from the same neighborhoods or had attended grade school together -- but both schools had tremendous school spirit and wanted to beat the other bad; both campuses were covered in signs during the week of the season opener."  The rivalry even spilled onto Central Avenue during the week of the big game, with then-acceptable antics such as "Brophy Avenue" signs placed over the Central Avenue signs.
