  • What is a "soap scrimmage" and why is it called that?
The soap scrimmage is the annual "end of pre-season practice" scrimmage for all the new teams to show their "stuff".  The new freshman, JV, and varsity teams scrimmage for the parents and fans on the last Saturday before the "season" starts.  The evening starts with the freshman scrimmage, then the JV scrimmage, and finally the varsity scrimmage.

Legend has it that year's ago admission to the soap scrimmage was actually a bar of soap to be used in the boys locker rooms throughout the year!   These days, the boys pick a charity they would like to support and admission to the soap scrimmage is that item.  In 2006 and 2004 admission was school supplies. In 2005 admission was bottled water.  The varsity team then hauls the collection off to Andre House or St. VIncent dePaul or wherever their selected charity is located.

Other than the Soap Scrimmage, are there any other pre-season scrimmages?

The AIAA allows one pre-season scrimmage for football.  The scrimmage is usually during the week - the week before the first game.

Do the boys really need to know the Brophy fight song?

Yes.  After every game - win or lose - the team goes over to the fans and band where they join in with the singing of the Brophy fight song.  In the past, after practice, Freshmen and JV coaches have been known throughout the season to randomly ask a player to stand in front of the team and sing the Brophy fight song.   It was always a "good thing," for the benefit of the rest of the team (especially after a tough practice), for the randomly picked player to know every word.  Suffice it to say, each team member learned the Brophy fight song!  The tradition continues after every Varsity game.  Want (or need) to learn the Brophy Fight Song?  Click Here

What is the Manresa football camp?
The football team starts the season with a retreat and light workouts in the cool pines of northern Arizona at the Brophy Manresa Retreat Center, in Oak Creek Canyon.  Campers need to bring workout clothes, pillow for the bus, cool weather evening clothes - (remember it's not 99 degrees in the shade at Manresa!) and personal items.  2007 may be different as the Manresa retreat is actually during official practice season.

What is a typical varsity football Friday for the team?

Football Fridays start immediately after school.  The boys do not go home or leave campus.  They have a team lunch/dinner around 3:00 (depending on where the game is) final game walkthroughs, chilling with their walkmans, dressing for the game, and even homework (although probably not much of the latter!).  The team then rides the bus to Phoenix College for the game.  After the game the team returns to Brophy by bus, has a short team meeting, and are then dismissed.

Is there practice on Saturdays during the season?
    Yes, every Saturday morning.

    Where is Camp Week?
Camp Week is in the Brophy gym – in the balcony.

    Who comes to Camp Week?
The varsity players come to Camp Week.

What should I bring to Camp Week?

The players definitely need to bring a blow-up mattress, pillow and bedding.

Some players bring actual mattresses, but make sure you have a plastic tarp under a real mattress because by the end of the week the gym floor is pretty gross.  You also need towels, personal items and a FAN.  Some players bring small refrigerators, personal snack, chairs, foos ball   – basically anything and everything they have in their rooms at home!  However, this year we have begun a "no plug in" camp.  We want to encourage our players to bond together with fun activities.  Players are not allowed to have electronic games, televisions, radios, iPods, (cell phone use will be limited).  They are encouraged to bring board games and cards (but, no chips allowed!).  Also remember to bring LONG extension cords, power-strips, and tape to secure the extension cords to the floor.   No visitors (girlfriends) or cars are allowed during Camp Week.

2007 Season Camp Week - Sunday, August 5 - Friday, August 10.  Move into the gym at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.  The boys will NOT sleep there on Sunday; only move in to be ready for the week.  Bring practice clothes, other casual clothes, and white or blue dress shirt and Brophy tie.  (They will have photographs taken for the Brophy Athletic Program on Tuesday, August 7.  Photos will be head and shoulder shots, so all they need is the shirt and tie.)  Bring an air mattress or other mattress to sleep on as well as bedding or sleeping bag and pillow.  They will be sleeping on the floor of the balconies in the gym for four nights, so they will need something to cushion their sleeping bags or bedding.  They can bring a comfortable chair, if they wish, as well as other comforts from home to make the week more comfortable.  Bring toiletries for the week, as well as towels.  Fans are recommended.  Electrical power is available on the balconies, but they will need extension cords and duct tape to secure the cords.  No electronic games (Xbox, PlayStations, etc.), iPods, TV's, DVD players, etc. will be allowed.  No refrigerators or coolers.  No headphones or technology of any sort.  They may bring cell phones, but only for receiving messages from home. Cell phones may not be used for sending and receiving text messages or voice mails throughout the day. They may bring board games (Monopoly, Risk, etc.), playing cards (no chips), puzzles, or other such entertainment.  No food or drinks of any sort will be allowed in the gym.  If you have plastic drawers, they are useful for keeping clothes and other items organized for the week.  They may bring a small lamp.  Again, extension cords are necessary and a power strip may be useful if they have multiple things to plug in.

The boys will report for Camp Week at 6:00 a.m. Monday, August 6 for their first practice of the day.  The boys will practice at 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. each day.  They will have a morning snack at 5:00 a.m. each morning prepared and served by the parents.  Michael's will prepare and serve breakfast after each morning practice, lunch and dinner.  Parents will provide an evening snack each evening at 9:00 p.m.  Parents are welcome to watch any practice as well as join the boys at 9:00 p.m. while they have their snack.  This evening snack is a good time to pick up laundry and bring fresh clothes and just visit with the boys and the other parents and coaches.  They will have their early morning snack and late evening snacks in the lobby of the gym.  Their other meals will be in The Great Hall.  The boys will move out of the gym on Friday, August 10 at noon.  No one will be allowed to leave until the gym is clean.

Are parents allowed at Camp Week?

In the past parents have been allowed to come to all practices.  Parents are asked to not eat with the players as Michael’s will charge for the extra meals.  Many parents do come for the evening practices.

What is the move-in and out schedule for Camp Week?

In the past, players have about an hour to move into the gym on Sunday (coach will set the time as August approaches).  Players then report first thing Monday morning for practice and stay until Friday noon-ish – whenever the gym is clean and looks like a gym again!  Students are NOT ALLOWED to have cars on campus during Camp Week!
